I will probably play my first playthrough by mostly following the story while exploring as I go. I may do a run that messes with the order of things later for fun.
Honestly, it looks like it has a deeper plot than I was expecting so I was pleasantly surprised.
As someone who is just barely about to get into Breath of the Wild, I’m personally gonna have to go to great lengths to avoid getting sidetracked by the massive open world. If The Phantom Pain is any indication, I’ve spent way more time exploring the world than the plot. Breath of the Wild doing that will extend my playtime by a couple dozen hours.

I’d personally like them to add more spinoff and RPG characters. Having characters like Professor E.Gadd, Geno, Fawful, Mona, Pauline Big Top, Ashley, etc some Paper Mario characters imagined in 3D would be cool. Also some returning vets like Petey Piranha would be cool too.
Count Bleck and Fawful have been long-shot wishes of mine in a Mario Kart roster for the longest time, so I share the sentiment. Of course, only the latter has something beyond a remote chance because he isn’t flat…literally.

The “Mii” Clone, the Xbox Avatars. Like Mii’s they’re limited to various sizes settings, but could in theory dress up as many other characters.
Not sure, honestly. Are the Xbox avatars really that cemented in the console’s history to merit entry into a fighter?

The choice of icons is poor indeed. I’d like more variety as every series featured was made by EAD (or Nintendo EPD now…) and I’m sure people would complain that they don’t have Pikachu…
Strange that given every icon is based on a series made by EAD, that F-Zero isn’t among them… But when you look at it, it makes sense considering they put so much into F-Zero back in the day only for it to fail, that they don’t consider the series recognizable enough or important enough for a profile icon…
It makes sense why we don’t have Kirby, Fire Emblem, or Pokemon – especially Pokemon (It is the only reason why I think Nintendo Kart will never happen): They’re 2nd party, although granted with all the Miitomo and Miitopia and that Kisake plate thing featuring Kirby despite not being 1st party, you’d think that the little guy would have some more presence.
I get the idea that the current set of icons is everything Nintendo can put in without hassle, and later down the line, deals with second and third parties would be made in order to allow more icons. They made a bunch of third party themes for the 3DS, so it stands to reason they could do it again for the Switch icons. Hopefully.
